3xW Hosting & Design Blog

Sat, 16 Feb 2008 15:18:20 -0600
This is the blog for 3xw.us hosting and design website, it is all about getting the most out of the Internet with resources and software that are free for all.

It used to be relatively easy: 486 was better than 386 which was better than 286... but there are no numbers any more. Only cryptic names and multiple variations. If you're not a CPU geek, you're doomed...

This Hostican hosting server is loading fast, and showing a fast server response of below 1 second time. For more speed test reports and server uptime report, refer to more posting in this hostican review blog.

In the coming days I’ll be sharing more web hosting and

marketing news with you. Stay well and have a great

weekend!

dedicated hosting Items For Viewing

Well, my first official review. In this review I will be covering a brief
outline of the hosting website, hostican.

Ill start things off by simply saying, wow. In these first few days, I could
not be more pleased. I switched from using the hosting company HostMonster.com.
Let me confidently say that I made the right switch.

First things first, service. I had to call HostMonster about 2 times initially
when I joined them. What a pain! There was a line every time I needed to talk to
a representative, and Ill add that their Hold music is just plain awful. When
I switched to hostican, I called them up, bam, talking with a person
immediately. No waits, no ear-ripping music, nothing except good ol people to
talk to. Not to mention their demeanor and manners. I must say, my experience
with their service has up to this point been absolutely seamless.

Now lets move on to hosting. The best thing about their hosting, in my eyes, is
the simplicity of their two different plans. They are both relatively
inexpensive, come loaded with lots of useful features, and have some great
resources available. The base plan comes with 200GB of disk space, 2 domain
names, one FREE domain, 2,500GB of monthly bandwidth, along with being
e-commerce enabled. Impressive. Remember, that is just the basic plan, only
$6.95 per month.

Now I will admit I havent had a whole lot of time to mess around with the
control panel, however they do offer a demo control panel for anyone interested
in looking at that, just go to their site. Now there was one feature that
ultimately switched me to hostican - Wordpress. Im sure there are lots of other
dedicated hosts that offer wordpress, but hostican made it so simple, it was
absolutely unbelievable. You just go onto control panel, click install
wordpress, and bam, there you go. Dont forget that hostican also provides tons
of free video tutorials on everything from setting up email addresses to
managing files in control panel. I however will only be using the WordPress
features, so the rest of the control panel is up to you to test.

The last thing I will write about for now that really grabbed my attention was
their affiliate program. It is quite amazing I must say. Its free to setup, you
dont even have to have a domain hosted with them to make an account. Basically,
they pay you X amount of dollars per person that signs up using your unique
link. The rates are $70 for the first 4 people you get and $90 for everyone
after that (This resets every month). Also, you can get higher rates if you are
able to refer over 10 people every month. Talk about big money! I signed up for
this right away, and I have their advertisement in my top header that goes to my
unique link. If you sign up under that, you help me and you dont have to pay
extra fees, hidden fees, nothing like that. So if you are in need of a host and
are in a giving mood, feel free to click that Ad up in the top header for
hostican.com.

Well, thats my very simple and basic review. My overall impressions of hostican
are perfect. Up till now things have been smooth, simple, easy, fast,
everything. I would definitely recommend their services to you, and remember,
click my affiliate link to help me out! Overall 10/10, excellent hosting
company.

Click Here to go to hostican website.

Please don't treat this as an average piece of writing on dedicated hosting. A lot of effort and hard work has been put to get this end product!

DreamHost Enters Into Application Hosting

Thu, 07 Feb 2008 11:18:12 +1100

Yesterday on my personal blog, I wrote about WordPress 2.3.3 upgrade due to a security exploit, and one issue I wrote in the comment, is that there are just too many blogs out there installed by Fantastico and alike, that are never updated. They are often targeted by the hackers, employed by blackhat SEO, to inject hidden links into existing blogs. Matt from WordPress agrees:

I think you also have a good point that we need to put pressure on the hosts and Fantastico to take responsibility for the blogs that they set up and stay current with releases.

Then I received DreamHost’s latest newsletter (January 2008), and in section 2 they introduced their new one-click install “easy mode”:

As dumbed-down as we already made our one-click installs, it seems, like politics, there’s always sufficient demand to make it even dumber.

Which is why we now have “easy mode” for our one-click installs, currently available only for WordPress and currently “BETA”:

http://panel.dreamhost.com/?tree=goodies.installer

When you do “easy mode”, you’ll be using a fully-hosted version of WordPress as opposed to getting files installed into your own web space.

This fully-hosted version WILL use your own MySQL database though, which you’ll have full control of. Although you can still pick from over 50 themes and enable some plugins we have installed, you won’t be able to customize the themes or install extra plugins.

However, you also won’t have to worry about managing your installation at all.. we’ll automatically handle all upgrades and it’s now on US to make sure your WordPress blog is always working and fast and correctly configured (so long as you don’t go mucking directly in your database)!

(In fact, “easy” WordPress one-clicks are ALREADY upgraded to 2.3.3!)

You still get the installation at any sub-domain of yours you’d like and of course there are no ads or anything of THAT ilk.

Also, “easy mode” is cool because ALL you do is pick a sub-domain and in less than 17 seconds you’re ready to blog!

Wow! What DreamHost has done is pretty much mimicking WordPress.com, an application hosting service that takes care of everything for its users! The service provider is responsible for updating all the software stack to ensure the service is always up to date and secure. Yes it is a locked-down platform and you cannot modify your theme files nor uploading any plugins (although there are already 50 themes installed), but sometimes you do have to trade flexibility for security.

Moreover, the database will be listed under your DreamHost control panel, and you are free to mysqldump and move it elsewhere later, which is something that you cannot do with WordPress.com. You should probably also host the media files (images, videos, etc) on a different sub-domain inside your DreamHost account, to make later migration easier.

With all that excitement, I went up to my DreamHost account to check it out straight away. Under “Goodies” and “One Click Installs”, you can now find this:

DreamHost Easy Mode One Click Install

Choose a software (only WordPress is available at the moment), choose a sub-domain and hit “Install for me now!” and the software is installed! A few seconds later, I can already browse to that URL, and what presents in front of me is a standard WordPress installation page where you type in your blog’s name and admin’s email address, and your WordPres blog is up and running in no time.

All too easy.

These are the plugins installed:

WordPress runs very fast as well. All blogs created are CNAME’ed to wordpress.dreamhost.com, instead of on the server your websites normally are. They probably run PHP in FastCGI which is why you can’t edit theme files inside WordPress (due to different uid).

$ curl -I http://<my blog>
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2008 23:48:45 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.61 (Unix) PHP/4.4.7 mod_ssl/2.0.61 OpenSSL/0.9.7e mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 DAV/2 SVN/1.4.2
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.4.8
Vary: Accept-Encoding
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8

Well done DreamHost!

Okay. Time for some disappointment. When I first logged into my shining new quick-installed WordPress blog, scrolled all the way to the bottom of the admin page, and this is what I saw…

WordPress 2.3.2

WordPress 2.3.2?! WTF?

Update: More issues:

  • Instead of WordPress-related websites and services, we have DreamHost blog/support/wiki/etc installed by default on the blogroll.

  • Can’t write to .htaccess which means no mod_rewrite, which means no clean URL.

Web Hosting Mergers and Acquisitions - January 2008

Fri, 08 Feb 2008 09:54:00 -0400

January was a bit slow --- this is often the case as firms often try to close transactions by the end of the year.

Sunnyvale, CA -- Network Appliance, Inc. NetApp (NASDAQ:NTAP) completed the acquisition of Boston based Onaro, a datacenter automation solution company in a $120 million transaction. It is reported that backers put about $9.5 million in Onaro, which looks like a great return.

Las Vegas NV-- Dialpoint Communications Corporation (OTCBB: DLPC), acquired the assets of South Carolina based Hostigation.com. Dialpoint issued 333,334 shares --- a deal which in another blog I noted was worth $50k in an all stock transaction.

Niagara Falls, ON - Canadian based Vision Online Network was acquired by Deli India based Real Value Hosting. Vision Online Network specializes in Windows based web hosting.

Duluth, GA - Ralph Smith's Fat Jack Hosting Acquired HostMyProxies.com, a proxy website host. HostMyProxies.com is based at an undisclosed location.

Dallas, TX – Affiliated Computer Services, Inc has acquired Syan for approximately $60 million. Syan’s trailing twelve-months revenue was approximately $75 million. The transaction was funded by existing cash on hand. Syan has several large data centers in the UK.

Tempe, AZ - Greenstreet Real Estate Partners acquired the Tempe One (Tempe, AZ) data and call center for $30.3 million.

Edmonton, AB, Canada – California upstart Enacten acquired all of the shares of Edmonton based Alentus Corporation in an all cash transaction. Alentus provides dedicated/managed and shared hosting services. New Commerce Communications (this blogger) represented Alentus in the transaction.

Pittsford, NY - Spider Graphics Corporation and ITX, a web technology and hosting firm merged. The new name is Spider ITX, very creative.

Overland Park, KS - Erickson Solutions Group has bought the client base of Nothing But Net a company that concentrates on Web and e-mail hosting. Hopefully the acquisition will help the Erickson corporate website.

Raleigh, NC - Hosted Solutions has acquired a new data facility, it's second in Charlotte, NC. The site adds 7,600 square feet of floor space.

Obviously not all inclusive - but from the NCC files.

Step 2 - Record Your IP Address

One-on-one with Niko Nelissen, Q-layer

Wed, 07 May 2008 17:33:00 -0500

Virtual private data centers, or VPDCs, are a new paradigm for data centers that we've been hearing quite a bit about in North America through companies like Layered Technologies and 3Tera.

In Europe, Q-layer has been offering a fully virtual private data center since 2005, enabling service providers to compete with next generation hosting offerings such as Amazon S3 and EC2, using the private virtual datacenter concept: utility-based provisioning and billing based on actual usage.

WHIRtv recently spoke to Niko Nelissen, VP of business development and co-founder of Q-layer, and gained some insight into his company's vision with VPDCs.

ServerWays OpenVZ VPS Review

Tue, 05 Feb 2008 00:17:42 +1100

Last week I needed a small VPS to test a new project so I went to Web Hosting Talk VPS offers forum to look for something really cheap, and found this deal at ServerWays.com. ServerWays is a new company, with its domain registered in December 2007. It is also a one-man shop according to this discussion thread. However it does not really matter to me as (1) it is only less than $5 per month (2) it is for a throw away project. So I clicked on the Order button for their lowest spec’ed VPS 111.

This is what you get for $4.90/month, billed monthly and no set up fee.

  • 100MB guaranteed memory

  • 10GB storage

  • 100GB/month transfer

  • OpenVZ + HyperVM

Provisioning and Setting Up

I submitted an order at around 22:30 -700 and got an notification pretty much straight away. It was set up at 1:40 -700 so 3 hours turn around setting up new accounts at odd hour of the day — not too bad. I ordered a Debian 4 Etch minimum, and then installed a basic PHP stack for some quick test.

  • MySQL 5.0.32 — default set up with query cache and innode DB turned off

  • PHP 5.2.0 — 2x FastCGI slaves

  • Lighttpd 1.4.13

A few observations while setting up this low end box.

  • Network is Cogent, which explains why it is so cheap.

  • Throughput of network is actually pretty good. I can download big Debian packages at around 500+ Kbps from US mirrors. Latency is not too bad either as the server is located in Portland Oregon. 190ms from my Sydney ADSL connection.

  • There is no “burstable” memory. 25,600 privvmpages — exactly 100MB that can be allocated by all processes. However, a simple stack like above + Exim4 + cron + syslog-ng + xinetd comes down to around only 35MB used.

  • Physical server is an old Pentium D 3.0Ghz. It is dual core, but your VPS only has access to only one of its CPU cores.

  • Most user_beancounters values are very reasonable. I guess these were set up by HyperVM.

  • meminfo has been virtualised so there is no way to find out the memory utilisation on the physical node.

It is all good so far. Until I started doing some test.

CPU — Severely Limited

So I have pretty much everything needed to serve up dynamic PHP content. I then checked out the latest WordPress from subversion, and started to install a new blog.

And it was frustratingly slow!!

An out-of-box WordPress front page having only one single “Hello World” post will take around 5 seconds to render (compare to around 0.3 second on my SliceHost VPS, and 0.8 second on my DreamHost account). Everytime you click on a link, you have to wait for 5 seconds for the page to be generated, and you can see the load went straight up with php-cgi as the most CPU-consuming process. However, there is something wrong —

It is only using less than 4% of CPU time!!

Basically throughout the 5 seconds it tried to generate the pages, PHP interpretor process exhausted all the CPU time this VPS is allowed to have, which is less than 4% of a single out-dated NetBurst core! It can be easily verified — just create a simple busy loop program in C, run it, and watch it consuming all the CPU resources you got — no more than 4% of the CPU time!

There might be a few possible explanations:

  • ServerWays has an overcrowded server where everyone is fighting for the CPU time

  • My VPS has been throttled with limited CPU time

To me it is more of later than former as the maximum CPU time my processes can get seems to be fixed at always less than 4%. Looking at /proc/cpuinfo reveals that the CPU has indeed been capped at 114Mhz. It appears that cpulimit has been used so my “burstable CPU” can never exceed 4% of a CPU core!

That seems to be defeating the purpose of virtualisation, where you get burstable CPU time to improve CPU utilisation, doesn’t it? So I opened a support ticket for clarification.

Support

It is also a great opportunity to test the support response. ServerWays uses WHM Complete as billing/support portal so I posted the following support ticket at 018:30 -700:

Hi ServerWays,

I have recently acquired a VPS 111 (great price, btw) to do some testing, and noted that it seems to be *limited* to 100Mhz, instead of guaranteed with 100Mhz, i.e. cpulimit instead of cpuunit in OpenVZ VE parameters. It is a bit frustrating seeing even a process with a spinning loop can use no more than 4% of CPU. With a testing WordPress install it is still taking around 5 seconds to generate each page because CPU utilisation has been throttled. Is that intentional with this plan?

Response came back 6 hours later. I won’t post the verbatim response here, but basically:

  • Yes it is intentional, setting provided by HyperVM.

  • You need to upgrade plans to get more CPU time.

Hmm. All right. Even if I upgraded to their VPS 555 plan with 500MB privvmpages, 50GB storage and 500GB monthly transfer for only $12.90, the CPU will still be limited at 500Mhz. The WordPress page generation time might be reduced by one fifth to 1 second per page, it is still far more than what I have expected.

Conclusion

There is no doubt ServerWays.com provides cheap low-end VPS. $4.90/month is even cheaper than many shared hosting accounts. 100MB burstable memory is plenty with a lighttpd/MySQL/PHP stack to run low traffic sites. And you have root to install anything you want.

However, its CPU limit has drastically reduced its usefulness. Forget about using it to run any dynamic site unless you are training your users the virtue of patience. For me, it is $4.90 wasted.

AN Hosting was created in early 2001 by a two man team and expanded at an
amazing rate. In 2005 it was acquired by midPhase and jointly they now host over
150,000 domain names on a modern network comprised of over 1,000 servers.

AN Hosting has followed the trend of many modern hosting providers by only
offering one standard plan to all its users. This does present many advantages
like better customer support and superior client satisfaction seeing as the
hosting provider specializes in only one unique product instead of a wide range
of services. Needless to say that any customer requiring a more tailor made
solution will have to look elsewhere.

Currently the hosting plan offers a robust 500gb disk space, 5000gb of bandwidth
and the possibility to host an amazing 40 domains. Setup is currently free but
this can be expected from most hosting providers nowadays. Other specs include
unlimited e-mail accounts, MySQL databases and sub domains. All hosting accounts
come equipped with the Fantastico manager which permits for one click install of
various popular scripts like Wordpress, Mambo, OScommerce, Sub Dreamer and
b2evolution just to name a few.

Prices vary considerably depending on the payment plan preferred. When paying
for six months the price will be $8.95mo whilst when opting for the 48 moth plan
the price is reduced to only $4.95mo. This is great for customers looking for
long term solutions but the same cannot be said for whoever cant afford the
$237.60 needed for the upfront payment. Please keep in mind that when ordering
the six month payment plan there is an extra $21.90 fee for the domain, with all
the other options this is totally free.

The site is extremely easy to navigate which is a breath of fresh air when
compared to other hosting companies that chose fill their sites with useless
clutter and promotional offers that only confuse the customers. With AN Hosting
purchasing a hosting plan is simple and an extremely straight forward experience
with no distractions along the way. Furthermore their customer support is
exemplary and receiving a reply to any inquiry generally only takes a few
minutes.

When it comes to payment options presented AN Hosting does require some
improvements. They only accepted form of payment consists of major credit cards
which represents a significant drawback especially for those that do not have
one of the credit cards required. Most hosting providers offer other options
including Paypal payments which has become the industry standard. In our opinion
this is a very negative feature that should be rectified especially if AN
Hosting wishes to cater for international customers.

anhosting.com is an excellent solution for customers that have some previous
hosting experience and are in the market for a stable, long term solution. On
the other hand, people requiring cheap hosting with the option of monthly
payments will have to look someplace else. Either than that AN Hosting is a
trusted hosting provider with many years of experience and an impeccable track
record.

Different Types of Domain Name Warehousing?

Now why and how does this happen? Well with some, but not all, domain name registers they make the renewal process so confusing and difficult to get through the client gives up and leaves. This probably couldn’t happen to people with established businesses or web sites Online but it could with those who might not know any better. I am reminded of the older gentleman who will hang up on a phone call anytime he is faced with a multiple choice pre-recorded option rather than a real person to answer his problems. 11 Quick Tips To Drive More Return Traffic To Your Business Website

Tue, 20 Dec 2005 00:00:00 EST
Sometimes you need a kick start to get of the ground when promoting your new business Web site. Use these 11 tips to get started.

Dedicated Servers

Wed, 27 Dec 2006 08:43:43 -0500

What is a dedicated server?  A few definitions:

From Wikipedia:

A dedicated hosting service, dedicated server, or managed hosting service is a type of internet hosting where the client leases an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment. Dedicated servers are most often housed in data centers, similar to colocation facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. In contrast to colocation, a dedicated hosting service provides system administration and owns the server itself.
